Introduction to IDS

The Information Contract

In the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, an Information Delivery Specification (IDS) serves as a contract for information. It precisely defines what data a BIM (Building Information Modeling) deliverable (in IFC format) should contain.

Core Concept

An IDS file is essentially a checklist of Specifications that an IFC model must satisfy:

  • Each Specification describes a particular information requirement
  • Example: "walls must have a FireRating property"
  • An IDS may contain many Specifications to cover various requirements

How IDS is Used

For Model Authors (architects, engineers):

  • Load IDS into authoring software
  • Ensure all required data is entered before delivery
  • Get guidance on what information is needed

For Model Recipients (clients, reviewers):

  • Use IDS-capable software to automatically check incoming IFC models
  • Receive reports of non-compliances
  • Identify where model data doesn't meet specifications
