Introduction to IDS

The Information Contract
In the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, an Information Delivery Specification (IDS) serves as a contract for information. It precisely defines what data a BIM (Building Information Modeling) deliverable (in IFC format) should contain.
Core Concept
An IDS file is essentially a checklist of Specifications that an IFC model must satisfy:
- Each Specification describes a particular information requirement
- Example: "walls must have a FireRating property"
- An IDS may contain many Specifications to cover various requirements
How IDS is Used
For Model Authors (architects, engineers):
- Load IDS into authoring software
- Ensure all required data is entered before delivery
- Get guidance on what information is needed
For Model Recipients (clients, reviewers):
- Use IDS-capable software to automatically check incoming IFC models
- Receive reports of non-compliances
- Identify where model data doesn't meet specifications
