Getting Started – Using an IDS

The 5-Step Process

Using an IDS involves these simple steps:

1. Choose an IDS-capable Tool

• Select software that supports IDS checking
• See buildingSMART's list of supported tools

2. Load the IDS and IFC Model

• Open the IDS file (.ids extension) in your tool
• Load the IFC model you want to check

3. Run the Check

• Initiate the validation process
• Software applies each Specification to the IFC model

4. Review the Report

• Tool generates report of all non-compliances
• Lists elements missing required properties or with incorrect values

5. Address Issues

If you're the model author:

• Use report to add missing information
• Correct data in the IFC model

If you're the recipient:

• Communicate issues back to author
• Decide if model meets contractual requirements
